San Jose, California – May 14, 2008 – Fairchild Semiconductor’s (NYSE: FCS) highly integrated Green FPS power switch, the FSFR2100, received a silver medal for being one of the best IC solutions for energy conservation.  This Green Apps contest showcases the unique and powerful contributions of semiconductor solutions for energy conservation.  600 engineers voted on the potential “green impact” of solutions entered in the contest by semiconductor manufacturers.

Readers said that Fairchild’s Green FPS power switch has “potential to save substantial amounts of energy” and shows the in-roads Fairchild is making in enabling green applications.  Fairchild’s FSFR2100 offers a dramatic improvement in efficiency in resonant converter designs such as telecom power, high-end audio amplifiers, large-size laser printers and LCD and TV power supplies.  Compared to conventional hard-switch converter topologies, efficiency is improved by 10 percent and for applications such as PDP-TVs, efficiency reaches 97 percent.   Through its burst operation function, the FSFR2100 reduces standby power consumption to below 1W to easily achieve the industry’s 1Watt Initiative.

Efficiency is extremely important in power supplies.  In standby mode alone, appliances consume five percent of residential energy worldwide. If only one percent of the households in the U.S. have set-top boxes that meet the 1-Watt standby power initiative using Fairchild components, this would save enough energy in one year to power 3954 average U.S. households.
